WAILUKU, Maui — A former Maui mayoral candidate who was arrested outside a candidate forum in July will get out of jail.
The Maui News reports that Nelson Waikiki Jr. will be released for the benefit of his victims.
Waikiki had pledged to pay $141,100 in restitution as part of a plea deal in his securities fraud case. He will pay $60,000 before or on his sentencing date on Dec. 10. He agreed to serve 10 years in prison if he doesn’t make the payment.
Waikiki had been jailed for more than nine months after his initial arrest last year. He was released on supervision in April after changing his plea.
Waikiki got more than 800 votes in the Aug. 9 primary election, finishing fourth out of six candidates running for mayor.
